Safety · Procedure
Isolate hazardous energy before any maintenance or clearing a jam. Certification required.
Put on safety glasses and insulated gloves
Protected before you approach an energized machine.
Notify affected operators
Tell everyone working on or near the equipment that it is going down.
Shut down at the control
Bring the machine to a normal stop using its own controls first.
Isolate energy and apply your lock + tag
Isolate every energy source and apply your personal lock and tag. One person, one lock — never another worker's.
Verify zero energy state
Try to start the machine (it must not run), then release stored energy.
Knowledge check
Confirm the verification step.
Q: After locking out, what must you do before starting work?
